In 2011, the USDA replaced the food pyramid, then known as MyPyramid, with MyPlate (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/eathealthy\/brief-history-usda-food-guides\" target=\"_blank\">1<\/a>). <strong>Every five years, the USDA releases a new set of Dietary Guidelines, and for nearly 20 years, the food pyramid was the symbol of these guidelines.<\/strong> <br><br>The USDA Dietary Guidelines feed the content of nutritional posters in schools nationwide, influence public school lunch programs, establish standards for food nutrition labels, inform nutritional health class curriculums, and guide doctors\u2019 dietary recommendations to patients (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fns.usda.gov\/tn\/myplate\" target=\"_blank\">2<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/usda-food-guide-pyramid.gif\" alt=\"USDA food guide pyramid\" class=\"wp-image-3487\" width=\"591\" height=\"460\"\/><figcaption>1992 USDA Food Pyramid (source: USDA)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With such broad influence, it\u2019s no surprise that the USDA Dietary Guidelines often undergo careful scrutiny and have been quite controversial over the years. <br><br>For example, throughout the late twentieth century, the USDA\u2019s Food Pyramid made fat content the devil, pitting it as the cause of heart disease and cancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jhmas\/article\/63\/2\/139\/772615\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3<\/a>). However, many nutritionists and food scientists now paint a different picture, claiming that a diet rich in refined carbohydrates, often synonymous with the base of the Food Pyramid, brings more people to the hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Since 1980, when the USDA issued its first Dietary Guidelines, the number of Americans who are obese or have type 2 diabetes has more than doubled (<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4046810\/dietary-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/statistics\/slides\/long_term_trends.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Food Pyramid vs. food industry lobbying<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re taught that healthy food is low in sugar and calories, that we need carbs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/types-of-grains\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grains<\/a>, calcium from milk, and protein from meat, but the reality of \u201chealthy food\u201d is much more complicated than it seems. <br><br>In 2010, the Supreme Court released a ruling in a landmark case, Citizens United v. FEC. This case dealt with the intersection of the First Amendment and corporate spending, concluding that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrzone.com\/hr-glossary\/what-is-corporate-personhood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate personhood<\/a>\u201d applies in the context of free speech. For a long time, the U.S. government didn\u2019t allow corporations to spend money on political campaigns in an effort to decrease the risk of corruption. However, the Citizens United ruling gave corporations the freedom to contribute money to political campaigns furthering their agenda. As a result, lobbying efforts by large food and beverage producers and brands keep their interests embedded within public food and health policy. <br><br><strong>With significant power over legislation, major food and beverage companies have a huge influence on what gets published in the USDA\u2019s Dietary Guidelines, and subsequently, what the Food Pyramid looks like.<\/strong><br><br>Last year, 237 clients lobbied the food industry, releasing 933 reports (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/federal-lobbying\/issues\/summary?cycle=2019&amp;id=FOO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6<\/a>). In 2015, as the USDA was releasing its 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, 255 clients lobbied the food industry, releasing 1,176 reports (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/federal-lobbying\/issues\/summary?cycle=2015&amp;id=FOO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7<\/a>). <strong>Some of the lobbyists\u2019 largest clients come as no surprise and include the likes of PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Monsanto, Nestle, and McDonald\u2019s, to name a few.<\/strong> When dealing with massive multi-national corporations such as these, you can be sure that large sums of cash are involved. <em>So, how much does the food industry spend lobbying U.S. food policy and regulation?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>In 2015, Coca-Cola alone spent $8.67 million on lobbying, the meat processing and production industry spent $4.58 million, the dairy industry spent $7.12M, and the food products manufacturing industry spent a whopping $18.83 million<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/federal-lobbying\/clients\/hired-firms?cycle=2015&amp;id=D000000212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/lobbying.php?ind=G2300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/lobbying.php?ind=A04++\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/industries\/lobbying.php?ind=G2100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11<\/a>).<br><br><strong>The USDA Dietary Guidelines show that money, power, and politics feed America&#8217;s obesity and chronic disease epidemic (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/an-epidemic-of-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>12<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/infographic\/chronic-diseases.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>13<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2020 USDA Dietary Guidelines fall short<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the meat and beverage industries deploying such large sums of lobbying dollars, it is no coincidence that the 2015-2020 USDA Dietary Guidelines downplay some important facts, compromising our nation\u2019s health in order to appease some of America&#8217;s largest food producers. <br><br>While the guidelines clearly state the importance of reducing dietary saturated fat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/sugar\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">added sugar<\/a>, and sodium in their executive summary, they leave out a critical detail \u2014 the main sources of these nutrients (<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/food-nutrition\/2015-2020-dietary-guidelines\/guidelines\/executive-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14<\/a>). <br><br>For example, it isn\u2019t until the reader takes a deep dive into the belly of the guidelines that they discover consuming less red and <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/gc\/sc10\/packaged-meat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">processed meat<\/a> can significantly decrease one\u2019s risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Even then, the document is written towards nutritionists and health professionals, making it difficult for the average American to understand, let alone interpret correctly and apply to their daily food and beverage choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USDA&#8217;s MyPlate vs. Harvard&#8217;s Healthy Eating Plate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides offering vague and indirect information, the striking difference between the USDA guidelines and other health authorities\u2019 may also point to industry influence, particularly in the case of dairy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"801\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate-1024x801.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate-1024x801.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate-768x601.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate-1536x1201.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Harvard-healthy-plate.jpg 1854w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Harvard Healthy Eating Plate<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The USDA recommends most people should consume three servings of <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/gc\/c4\/dairy-and-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dairy<\/a> daily, while the Harvard School of Public Health recommends limiting dairy to just one to two servings per day (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/eathealthy\/dairy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/healthy-eating-plate-vs-usda-myplate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">16<\/a>). Harvard cites there is little evidence to suggest dairy is essential for health, yet there is \u201cconsiderable evidence\u201d that too high a dairy intake can be harmful (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/news\/20200214\/rethinking-mik-science-takes-on-the-dairy-dilemma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/healthy-eating-plate-vs-usda-myplate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18<\/a>). <br><br>The stark disparity between the USDA\u2019s and Harvard\u2019s recommendations for dairy illustrates the influence food industry lobbyists have on our perception of what is \u201chealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USDA Guidelines overlook food sustainability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the USDA completely axed sustainability considerations from the Dietary Guidelines despite its own Advisory Committee recommending food system sustainability be incorporated into the dietary recommendations (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2015\/10\/06\/446369955\/new-dietary-guidelines-will-not-include-sustainability-goal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19<\/a>). Sustainable farming, herding, and manufacturing processes are ones that preserve resources and have minimal impact on the environment. Eating sustainably attained food, such as crops grown without toxic pesticides or pasture-raised cattle, is generally better for the planet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6434678\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/pesticide-residues-in-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">21<\/a>).<br><br>The USDA&#8217;s Dietary Guidelines signal our health and the environment come second to the deep pockets of a small group of profit-driven corporations that control America\u2019s industrialized food system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Food Pyramid and America&#8217;s health epidemic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why does the food pyramid matter? <\/em>The heavy hand that major food and beverage companies have on the USDA\u2019s Dietary Guidelines is deeply disturbing when you consider the influence they have on America\u2019s understanding of what is a \u201chealthy diet.\u201d <br><br><strong>Despite billions of dollars invested in healthcare and medical research annually, childhood obesity is on the rise, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is higher than ever, and heart disease is the leading cause of death, killing 647,000 Americans every year (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/141\/3\/e20173459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>22<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/pdfs\/library\/diabetesreportcard2017-508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>23<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>24<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong> It&#8217;s hard not to wonder how much of our nation&#8217;s decaying health is a product of the deception fueled by big food and ag spending and amplified by the U.S. food pyramid.<br><br><strong>If there\u2019s one thing that the U.S. food pyramid teaches us, it\u2019s that the truth is in the details and that the details are complicated. <\/strong>Nonetheless, hope for a healthy America is not lost.
