Its purpose is to display which farm foods are following the Humane Farm Animal Care\u2019s (HFAC) guidelines and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About H<\/strong>umane Farm Animal Care (HFAC)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is a non-profit certification organization with a mission to improve the standards of animal welfare from birth through harvesting. <br><br>HFAC makes their standards transparent and available to the public so that each consumer can make a conscious decision in their grocery purchases and play a part in animal welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/d1479c_add0e514c5a44ed4ae791d3682796c30~mv2.png\/v1\/fit\/w_300,h_300,al_c,q_5\/file.png\" alt=\"certified humane seal\" width=\"238\" height=\"232\"\/><figcaption>Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled Label<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, the Certified Humane certification looks the same on every product yet the standards for certification vary based on the product and its claims. <br><br>For example, you will see that \u201ccage-free\u201d eggs, \u201cfree-range\u201d eggs, and \u201cpasture-raised\u201d eggs all have the same Certified Humane certification yet they all must meet very different standards.<br><br><strong>It can be difficult to remember the difference between the standards of each Certified Humane egg product.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breakdown of Certified Humane Standards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we breakdown the Humane Certified Raised &amp; Handled standards for eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/makes-certified-humane-cage-free-eggs-different-cage-free-eggs\/\">&#8220;Cage-free\u201d eggs<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These hens must have at least 1.5 square feet of space per hen. Here, the birds are not required to have access to outdoor space. They must have 8 hours of light and 6 hours of continuous darkness during a 24-hour cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/free-range-and-pasture-raised-officially-defined-by-hfac-for-certified-humane-label\/\">&#8220;Free-range\u201d eggs<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If outdoor access is a must for you, you may want to consider free-range eggs. The hen must have at least 2 square feet per bird with access to the outdoors for a minimum of 6 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/free-range-and-pasture-raised-officially-defined-by-hfac-for-certified-humane-label\/\">&#8220;Pasture-raised\u201d eggs<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a consumer who is looking for the highest quality of animal welfare, with the most extensive certification standards, you should purchase pasture-raised eggs. Their standards include at least 108 square feet per bird. Also, the birds must be outside all year with easy access to mobile and fixed housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>When shopping for Certified Humane egg products: <\/strong><br><br><strong>First look for the certification on the packaging (as seen below). <\/strong><br><br><strong>Second, pay attention to what claim the packaging has stated: \u201ccage free\u201d, \u201cfree-range\u201d, or \u201cpasture raised\u201d.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"790\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/cfc52962152afd7446e72064b9165440.jpg\" alt=\"cage free egg label\" class=\"wp-image-2245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/cfc52962152afd7446e72064b9165440.jpg 790w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/cfc52962152afd7446e72064b9165440-300x87.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/cfc52962152afd7446e72064b9165440-768x224.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>See <a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Std18.BeefCattle.1M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Certified Humane Cattle Animal Welfare Standards<\/a>.<br><\/strong><br><strong>See <a href=\"http:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Std18.Pigs_.1A-3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Certified Humane Pig Animal Welfare Standards<\/a>.<br><\/strong><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/how-we-work\/our-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Animal Welfare standards for each animal<\/a> covered by Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled standards for all animal species<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>All animals must not be confined to cages, crates, or tie stalls.<\/strong> This means that Certified Humane products come from farms that allow their animals to live a natural life.<br><\/li><li><strong>Certified Humane products reduce the stress of animals through gentle handling and by providing enough shelter.<br><\/strong><\/li><li>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/shopwithyourheart\/consumer-resources\/meat-eggs-and-dairy-label-guide\">ASPCA<\/a>, <strong>Certified Humane food bans hormones along with <a href=\"https:\/\/dash.harvard.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/1\/8965587\/ebarclay.html?sequence=2\">sub-therapeutic antibiotics<\/a>.<\/strong><br><\/li><li><strong>All animals are to be fed a nutritious, healthy diet that is free of animal by-products and added antibiotics or hormones. They must have access to a sufficient amount of clean, pure water.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cost of Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled Certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"hens in a pasture\" class=\"wp-image-2244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenchoicenow.com\/v\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/agriculture-alive-animals-2255459-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When applying for the initial application or renewal, <a href=\"http:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/pdfs\/Fee%20Schedule.13.2E.pdf\">farmers must pay HFAC<\/a> a $75 application fee.<br><br>Farmers receive feedback and support from HFAC through their inspections which costs $600 per day per inspector, however, there is an option to split the fee with other nearby farmers. <br><br>HFAC also offers inspections during the production process which costs $700 per day per inspector. Furthermore, Certification fees vary based on the number of animals and products produced and sold from those animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Limitations to the Certified Humane Raised &amp; Handled Certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Beak trimming.<\/strong> Although Certified Humane standards forbid debeaking, it still allows the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/certifiedhumane.org\/beak-trimming\/\">beak trimming<\/a>. The purpose of the beak trimming is to prevent pecking and cannibalism.<br><\/li><li><strong>Outdoor access.<\/strong> Certified Humane \u201ccage-free\u201d birds are not required to have outdoor access.<br><\/li><li><strong>Humane euthanasia. <\/strong>HFAC follows the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avma.org\/KB\/Policies\/Pages\/Euthanasia-Guidelines.aspx\">American Veterinary Medical Association\u2019s<\/a> methods of euthanasia. When the animal is in a state of suffering, HFAC permits methods of euthanizing the species.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all, although there are some misconceptions of what the Certified Humane certification really indicates, it does provide meaningful insight into the overall treatment of animals and farm facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to follow and compare all the components of the many animal welfare certifications out there, so stay tuned for GreenChoice\u2019s Animal Welfare system coming soon!
